What is Shape NC?

Shape NC is an initiative across the state to promote healthy eating and active play among NC’s youngest children, from birth through five years.

According to 2012 Onslow County Community Health Assessment Summary, almost 1 in 3 adults in Onslow County are overweight or obese. A higher percentage of adults in Onslow County are overweight or obese than in other parts of North Carolina.

Shape NC focuses on three key areas: nutrition, physical activity and the outdoor learning environment. Some of the evidence-informed strategies employed include:

  • Improving nutrition and physical activity policies and practices in child care (NAP-SACC: Nutrition and Physical Activity Self-Assessment for Child Care).
  • Increasing active play by creating outdoor learning environments for children attending child care centers (Natural Learning Initiative at NC State University, the purveyor of Preventing Obesity by Design).
  • Increasing healthy movement through the use of Be Active Kids ®, a signature program of the BCBSNC Foundation focused on early childhood physical activity.

As part of the community component of Shape NC, a diverse group of stakeholders, Shape Onslow Kids, convened and developed a Community Action Plan. The Community Action Plan is designed to give children in Onslow County daily opportunities for routine physical activity, access to nutritious food and connection to the natural world.

At a time when the nation is facing rising health costs and high obesity rates, Shape NC is taking a preventative approach to proactively address the issue, focusing on the states youngest children.

So what can we do to begin a healthier lifestyle here in Onslow County?

  • Increase your water consumption
  • Increase your physical activity
  • Increase your consumption of fruits and veggies
